Our last post in the series British Food Fortnight and I hope we have given you all some ideas of how to buy British! Thanks to a tip off from Arabella from Natural Nursery on our Facebook page. She gave me some leads to check out for British Food Fortnight, which included yesterdays post on monthly organic meat boxes form Well Hung Meat and Own – Devon’s Online Supermarket.

This is a great idea and one that makes me want to up sticks and move to Devon! I hope more of these ideas spring up all over the place. Own, have a wonderful range of products, which are locally sourced by their team of professionals. All you have to do is register and start shopping, similar to your big national stores BUT is local and is supporting small independent businesses and traditional methods of farming.

Delivery is free in the local area for orders over £60. Minimum order is £25. If you live out of the area, but still want to be part of it, you can for a fee of £8.50 your order will be delivered by national courier on a Friday pm.

I love the name of this company,Well Hung Meat it is so tongue in cheek, and catchy, that it makes you want to visit their website and see what they have to offer. I checked it out and found they offer a wide range of organic meat. I really like the idea of their monthly meat boxes.

You get to say what you do or do not like and they will tailor it to your needs, which is great if like us you do not eat pork but love steaks and chicken. The small box includes: 1 x 1.2kg joint, 2 packs of seasonal cuts, 1 pack of chops, 1 pack of beef steak mince, 1 pack of speciality cuts and 1 pack of handmade sausages.

All this from Well Hung Meat for £47, which saves you about 15% if you were to buy it individually.

British Food Fortnight: Bookham Fine Foods

I love going to Farmers’ Markets and it was while shopping at one that I discovered Bookham Fine Foods, makers of delicious cheese, fresh pasta and sauces. Bookham Fine Foods is a family run business based in Sussex. Many of the ingredients they use are sourced locally and according to season. I have tried many of their products and they all taste wonderful!

Bookham Fine Foods sell at Farmers’ Markets in Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex, so you can visit their stall and try some of the products before you buy them. A list of shows and markets is posted on the website each month. You can also search for local stockists and shop online. You could try one of the following:

1. Not Just a Pasta Cheese (formerly known as Twineham Grange Farmer’s Hand Cheese) – a delicious medium fat hard cheese which is very similar to Parmesan but made with pasturised milk. Great with pasta and delicious in cheese sauces. Not Just a Pasta Cheese costs £8.50 for 700g but can be bought in smaller pieces from stockists and Farmers’ Markets.

2. Fresh Ravioli – lots of delicious varieties that change according to the season. The Slow-Roasted Winter Vegetable and Butternut Squash and Ricotta, both from their current range, would be perfect for a warming Autumn supper. Ravioli costs£2.99 for 200g pack.

3. South Downs Butter – delicious on crumpets and hot crusty bread, you just can’t beat the taste of real butter! Available in 250g packs costing £1.99.
