Children prepare to celebrate with Embercombe Country Fair 1-6 June 2009

embercombeChildren Prepare to Celebrate with Embercombe Country Fair – 1 to 6 June

School children staying at Social Enterprise Embercombe in the Teign Valley, Exeter, will be coming together for a week of exciting activities culminating in a day long Country Fair on Saturday 6 June, 10am – 4 pm.

We are inviting the media to come and film, photograph, interview staff, visitors and children and join in this exciting week from Monday 1st June to the Saturday’s Country Fair.  There will be a wide range of sustainable, educational and fun activities and the week is part of the BBC’s Springwatch week and sponsored by the Big Lottery Fund and BBC Breathing Spaces.

Embercombe is a charity set up to inspire people to take action for a sustainable world and hosts people of all ages from businesses and families, who come to stay in cosy yurts all year round. This includes schools from across Devon and beyond, who have been coming to spend from a day to a week to learn about the importance of our woodlands and horticultural land. This term has been fully booked, with children spending time making timber pegs, den making and helping manage the woodland and also in Embercombe’s large market garden, growing plants, harvesting them, cooking, and bread making – all as part of the national curriculum.

At the Country Fair, visitors can explore the 20 acres of mature broadleaf woodlands which, thanks to Breathing Places, Forestry Education Initiative, Dartmoor National Park and Forestry Commission grants, has been restored and coppiced over the last year allowing the abundant wildlife to flourish. The trail winds through five natural habitats, past charcoal burners and a mobile sawmill.

There will be woodland craft activities for all including green woodworking, felting and basketry, a craft market with local food producers and craft workers, and continuous traditional country games for all ages including egg and spoon, slippery pole, tug of war and sack races.  Blacksmiths will be demonstrating and teaching their skills and visitors can adopt and plant a tree on the estate.  Live music will accompany the café’s scrumptious food from Embercombe’s own lands, such as organic pizzas cooked in outdoor ovens, a barbeque with local venison and lamb and veggie options, cider, elderflower fizz, pasties, salad from the Embercombe garden, organic ice-creams and Devon cream teas.

Nature is the theme of the raffle too, with prizes including a canoe trip for ten people down the River Dart and a luxury £100 organic food hamper.

Entrance to the fair is FREE – Accessibility: please be aware that this is a hilly site, with rough tarmac tracks and grassland. We have wheelchair access toilet and yurt facilities.

Embercombe is a registered charity, social enterprise and company limited by guarantee, based at Higher Ashton, Exeter, Devon EX6 7QT
