Children’s Activity Parties: Wimbledon

Summer and Wimbledon seem intrinsically linked to me and a Wimbledon party is a great way of celebrating the arrival of summer (and hopefully, summer weather!).
For refreshments, serve strawberries with either cream or ice cream. How about this non-alcoholic Pimms and lemonade style drink? It’s probably more for adult tastes as it isn’t too sweet, but my 3 year old loved it too. You need 1 part red grape juice, 4 parts white grape juice, 2 parts lemon juice, 6 parts orange juice and add a generous pinch of cinnamon, plus about a teaspoon of camoumile (from a camoumile tea bag). Allow the flavours to steep through for 10 minutes and then strain through muslin or failing that unbleached kitchen paper. Now add tonic water to taste (I used roughly 2 pints/1litre). Garnish your jug with ice and slices and serve in long tall glasses.
Get some tennis balls (you can buy ex-coaching balls on ebay and elsewhere for a fraction of the price of new balls) for your games. Hide tennis balls around the garden and have a competition to find as many as possible. Another simple game is to place a bucket a short distance away from a marked spot and get the children to throw 3 or 4 balls each into the bucket. If there is a tie, you could move the bucket further away until you have a clear winner.
Larger parties in bigger gardens could have a relay game where teams of children run to retrieve a ball at a time and bring it back to their home base. If you have a tennis set or a swing ball game, then this is a great time to dust it off and have a few games.
