Your precious baby has arrived and you may already have a crib or Moses Basket, but it is so important that you choose the right cot mattress. There are a huge assortment of cot bed mattresses out there, for all different shapes and sizes of cots, cribs and Moses Baskets. It is suggested that you buy a new mattress as opposed to a second-hand one. This is to ensure that the mattress is clean and is not damaged or harbouring any harmful bacteria. However, how do you choose the cot mattress that is right for your baby and your needs?
Cot mattresses generally come in two basic sizes, 140x70cm or 120x60cm. It is recommended that the gap between the mattress and the cot is no more than 4cm and that the mattress is firm and flat. Moses Basket and pram mattresses tend to vary in shape and size. A mattress with a covering that you can take off is a good idea so that you wash it on a regular basis.
You may only need a mattress on certain occasions. Maybe you are a grandparent and only use the crib or cot when the family visit. In this instance you may not need a thick mattress, but as baby gets heavier you will need a more substantial mattress.
Of course here at TGF we recommend buying a cot mattress made with organic materials. Coir cot mattresses have a core of coconut fibre with other layers of different materials. The fibres are coated in latex for strength and protection and the natural fibre filling helps air to circulate through the mattress. These mattresses are one of the firmest types and hold their shape well.
Hypoallergenic or anti-allergy cot mattresses are a good choice if your baby suffers with asthma or allergies. They usually come with a quilted top layer that can be easily detached from the body of the mattress, so you can wash it at 60 degrees C to kill any dust mites that may cause allergies.
All cot mattresses should conform to safety requirements and you can tell this by checking that they carry the BSI number BS 1877-10:1997.
Whatever your choice, buying the right mattress for your baby will give you peace of mind and will ultimately make bedtime a happier and stress free place because you can rest assured in the knowledge that you have provided a safe and secure place for your little darling to sleep on.

A good quality sprung one is better if you can manage it but there is nothing wrong with a foam one if that is all you can manage.
