If you are looking to ‘go green’ with your feminine care products, then there are two options, either washable / reusable products or disposable ones. Whichever you prefer, there are a great selection of products around, so you’re sure to find something that suits you. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
If you like to use tampons but are looking for a truly lasting and reusable option, then have a look at the Mooncup. Made from soft, medical grade silicone, the Mooncup is a reusable menstrual cup. It sits low in the vagina and ‘collects” menstrual fluid, rather than absorbing it like usual disposable tampons. This means it doesn’t cause dryness or irritation and is very comfortable to use. I finally got round to buying myself one of these last year and can thoroughly recommend them. It took me a little while to get used to, but I find it very easy to use now, and I’m so pleased that I took the plunge and bought one. Instead of changing the cup, as you would with a tampon, simply remove it, empty and rinse it, and it’s ready to use again. Although it costs more to buy at first, the Mooncup can be used again and again, saving you money in the long run. And as it can be used overnight and whilst swimming and exercising, it makes a great alternative to disposable tampons. Mooncups can be bought from most online ethical retailers including Natural Collection (£17.95) and So Organic (£19.99). You can also find it in most high-street Boots stores.
If you prefer sanitary pads, then there are also washable and reusable options available. Babi Pur stock a selection of breathable, washable sanitary pads by Imse Vimse. Made from soft, organic cotton flannel, the pads are chemical and gel free and have wings that snap together under your knickers to keep them in place. Babi Pur recommend that you have enough pads to last for your period so that you can place used pads in a bucket and wash them all together at the end of your period. This may seem time-consuming, but I have used washable nappies with both my daughters – storing nappies in a bucket and washing them becomes quick and easy once you are used to it and I imagine it’s exactly the same with washable sanitary pads. The pads are available in packs of three and come in three different sizes: Night Pad (£12), Regular (£10) and Panty Liner (£8).
If you prefer disposable products, have a look at what Natracare and Nature Womencare have to offer. Both produce a range of products including feminine wipes, panty liners and sanitary pads. Natracare also make tampons. All Natracare products are made from certified organic and natural plant-derived material. All ingredients are sourced from sound
ecologically managed producers and their products are chemical and additive free and biodegradeable. As well as being available in most Waitrose stores, Natracare products can be bought online at Spirit of Nature and Love Lula.
Nature Womencare products are also based on natural and renewable materials. They are biodegradable, chlorine free and made up of layers of nonwoven tree pulp and natural GM free maize. The absorbancy layer is also made from natural tree pulp. Nature Womencare are available from Ocado and Ethical Superstore.

Hi there, i love your site and regularily read your blogs. I just thought i’d let you know that i have used re-usable sanitary pads before and i hated them. Not for me I’m afraid, even though i try to be really ‘green’ i just can’t manage that. I will definately give the mooncup a go, but at the moment i swear buy natracare products. I buy mine from buyorganics, another great site too.
