Who are you and what is your position ?
My name is Paul Clephane and i am co-owner of Kamikaze boarding along with my business partner Chris.
The reason for starting your company?
Me and Chris had just finished a kitesurfing session in Shoreham-by-sea in August 2008 and were discussing how ordinary some of the well known surf brands had become and completely unethical.
We then decided to set up our own brand and both threw ourselves into the business and were researching that evening and hav`nt stopped since.
How long have you been in business?
The idea was born in August 2008 but we started trading April 2009.
Tell us about your products?
Our first range of clothing was all Fairtrade and a selection of organic, but our new collection that we have just released is Fairtrade, Organic and carbon neutral. In the early days we received so many samples of clothing that were ethical but we also wanted our clothing to fit well and touch and feel right and we finally found our supplier. Our Illustrator Will who creates our designs is based out of Los Angeles we have never met but we have skyped so many hours we are like family. We would throw an idea at Will and 3 mock up designs would come back and slowly Will would create his magic. Many years at Walt Disney and working for major companies like Tony Hawk, Levis to name a few we are very lucky to have Will on board. The screen printing, labels are all UK based and the seamstress is my lovely wife who does a fantastic job.
What is your favourite green luxury item?
My home made organic surf wax, this is made from locally farmed bees wax, resin captured from local pine trees and organic coconut oil. We are hoping to release our own brand soon once we have sourced suitable packaging. We already have the Board wax design which is shown on our mens/ ladies Tees and hoodies.
What is your top green tip?
Have the balls to tell people when they are not being eco friendly and educate them, starting your car for 30 minutes to defrost the windscreen with a neighbour recently.
Also my kids love this www.earthhour.wwf.org.uk a billion people around the world to switch off your lights for an hour and get the candles out, great fun. Get involved and sign up!
What do you do to relax ?
Snowboarding off piste listening to Jimi Hendrix blows the cobwebs away.
