Getting Back to Nature!

Last year, Erica one of our regular contributors gave us regular updates on her allotment patch.  The posts were read avidly by our loyal readers and seemed to strike an accord with many of our readers who have emailed me with comments about their own grow your own success stories.

At TGF we are totally committed to supporting the back to nature eco thoughts behind the grow your own movement.  We are passionate about the fact that people should eat seasonally and where possible they should try and source their fruit and vegetables from either, farmer markets, greengrocers etc rather than the big superstores!

It is well known that the fresh produce that is sold in the major stores are protected by preservatives to keep them looking good whilst in transit and then while they are sitting on the shelves waiting for you to buy them.  I know this from personal experience, years ago my middle child was allergic to fruit and vegetables, but it was not the actual fresh produce, because if he ate fruit and vegetables that were grown naturally he was ok, it was only the produce that had been coated in preservatives that made him ill!

If more people were to buy their fresh produce from local suppliers and to buy in season, then we would also be doing our bit to help cut down the carbon emissions from all the transporting that is necessary to shift the produce around the country.

Of course the health benefits of actually getting out there and doing some hard work in the garden should be a good incentive for people to get back to basics and get fit at the same time.

Also children love helping in the garden.  My own daughter has her own corner in the garden and last year she grew some tasty onions, marrows and carrots.  Not only is it fun, but it is very educational without them actually realising it!

So with all these benefits in mind, how can you resist attempting to try and grow your own produce this year?
