Seasalt’s Project raises £2000 for The Bumblebee Conservation Trust
Seasalt’s second Go Knit! charity window campaign was another huge success this year. The project has been a real knit-athon with 612 scarves knitted and £2000 raised for the Bumblebee Conservation Trust.
Go Knit! is one of Seasalt’s annual charity campaigns, where members of the public are invited to make and donate hand-knitted scarves, which are then displayed in Seasalt windows during October, with all proceeds going to charity.
Seasalt’s award-winning window designer, Kathryn Wild, came up with the idea of Go Knit! for last year and explains: “It’s a really fun and creative way to support some great causes. There is a real sense of community spirit amongst our knitters and customers, which stretches right across the country. We are so grateful and delighted with how many knitters have got involved the campaign again this year. We’ve had a number of knitting groups join in with the project too – groups from Falmouth, St Austell, Liskeard and ‘Stitch and Bitch’ in London to name but a few.”
All proceeds from the sale of the scarves have been donated to The Bumblebee Conservation Trust (BBCT), founded in response to the ‘plight of the bumblebee’. As a charity concerned with wildlife and the environment, the BBCT was a perfect fit with Seasalt’s own ethical values; the company being the UK’s leading producer of Soil Association Certified organic cotton clothing.
The BBCT raises awareness of the dwindling population of bumblebees and has undertaken projects such as creating the world’s first bumblebee sanctuary. “In the last 70 years two species have become nationally extinct and several others have experienced dramatic declines. We aim to prevent further declines, and to raise awareness of the problems bumblebees face.” (BBCT website).
Natasha Rolph, speaking on behalf of the BBCT, is amazed by the response towards Go Knit! and says: “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved with Seasalt’s inspired ‘Go Knit’ campaign. Thanks to the hard work and generosity of so many dextrous bumblebee fans, BBCT is able to take a great step forward in helping protect and conserve bumblebees. We have a number of exciting projects at the moment from saving two of the rarest bumblebees, to the world’s first re-introduction of a bumblebee species back into the UK. This substantial sum of money will go a long way to ensuring their success!”
Kathryn and everyone at Seasalt would like to thank all those who supported in this year’s Go Knit! and welcomes anyone who wants to get involved in the campaign next year. For Go Knit! 2010, Seasalt will be asking people to help by knitting or crocheting Christmas decorations and donating them to be sold for charity in the run up to Christmas.
