firepitWeeds that sprout up each spring can spoil the look of a yard, driveway, and sidewalk. If you need help with weeds in your landscape, then weed control services are necessary. A proven lawn plan will be the best defense against intrusive weeds. If you are seeing weeds in your yard, then there are a few ways to prevent the occurrence of crabgrass and dandelions.
Lawn Fertilizer
The right amount of fertilizer is needed to prevent the growth of weeds. If too much is used, then some weeds will take off instead of go away. One type of weed that will benefit from the over fertilizing of a yard is crabgrass. Sparse areas of your yard will occur if too little fertilizer is used. Weeds grow in an area where too little fertilizer is applied. Contact a lawn care specialist about applying fertilizer to your yard.
Watering Grass
Grass that is already established in a yard needs to be watered infrequently. You do not want to water a yard simply because it might be dry. The light frequent watering of a yard causes shallow roots. This is a reason for the appearance of various weeds in an otherwise pristine yard. If you do not water the yard enough, then Bermuda grass and other weeds that thrive in drier soil will begin to grow. Lawns need to have a maximum or 1-inch of water each week.
Lawn mowing
A professional lawn care service will recommend that a homeowner set the deck of their mower higher when mowing. Lawns that are cut too low will end up with weakened turf. This reduces nutrients from grass leaf and allows light to shine on the soil. Light will help weed seeds to germinate and grow. Your lawn lower should have the deck set to the highest point, such as 2 to 4 inches off the ground.
Hand Weeding
This is a technique that can be used to permanently remove a weed from your yard. Many weeds in the yards of homeowners are perennials, such as dandelions. These have a deep taproot that allows them to grow back each season if the entire root is not removed from the ground. Moist soil is important to pull weeds by hand. The best way to remove perennial weeds is to use a hand spade or garden shovel. Press the shovel into the ground at a slight angle and pull down. The weed should pop out of the ground.
Boiling Water
Weeds that are growing on a sidewalk or driveway can be burned with boiling water. If you make tea or boil water for noodles, then take the excess water and pour it on the weeds. This is a good method for a patio with cracks or stone paths. Weeds should be trimmed of their top growth before pouring the water from a kettle or pan.
Additional Information
Herbicides are another option to kill weeds permanently if they are used correctly. If you are applying this type of product to new grass, then it may die if the roots are not yet mature.

  1. Vinegar works also great on patios. Kills weeds and gets right to the roots.
