Guest Post: Gorgeous, Glamorous and Green

It’s difficult to be green and be fashionable. It’s so easy to give into temptation, walk into the nearest shop and splurge your salary on the latest looks, regardless of their ethical value. However, the market is definitely expanding for green clothing. Companies across the globe now specialise in ensuring their produce is made with the planet and its resources in mind. Whether you want to look great for someone you met on online dating sites or you’re planning your wedding, never fear, you can be gorgeous, glamorous and green. All you need to do is be resourceful and look in the right places…

Readdress

The first thing to do is readdress how you shop and where you shop. Before buying anything always think about where it came from – examine labels and always look at all the available information if you’re on the net.

Next, start looking in new places for clothes that are organic, vegan, sustainable or fair trade. There are plenty of websites which stock clothes that have been made in these eco-conscious ways and many boutiques, you just to have a proper browse for the one that will suit you.

Also, begin to shop locally in independent chains and market stalls – it will be comforting to know you’re wearing threads put together just around the corner rather than flown from a distant part of the world. Although it may be slightly more expensive, you’ll find tons of ethical and also highly fashionable clothes in this way.

Remake

When you get bored of an outfit, don’t throw it away. Be experimental and try and change it into something else: old jeans into denim shorts, dresses into baby-doll tops – try out your sewing skills and get creative!

Reuse

If you feel that an outfit really cannot be adapted or remade, see if you can swap it for something else. Swap-shops are relatively common events where you turn up with items you dislike and swap them for new ones that you love. Try and get this kind of arrangement going with your friends as well. Swapping is better than wasting, and you’re likely to get a whole new wardrobe out of it!

Recycle

Be experimental with what you wear. There are loads of amazing pieces of jewellery, bags and clothing out there that are made from recycled materials. A bracelet made of plastic bags, for example, or a bag comprised of coke cans. Although they might sound a little tacky, these accessories are sought after and extremely fashionable.

Whether you’re using a dating website Newcastle has to offer, or trying to impress an old friend, don’t sacrifice your ethics for fashion. Green needn’t mean wearing pastel colours and looking boring. You just need to use your imagination and your computer…
