live nativeISLAND LIFE No 6 – Bless my Sensitive Skin!

As the crisp, chill days of autumn speed us toward yet another winter, this is typically the time that most of us reach for that extra-rich day cream. The cold winds are often laced with needle sharp teeth of frost and play havoc with our skin, making winter the most challenging time of year to maintain that perfectly radiant complexion!

However, in attempting to soothe and protect our besieged skin we may unwittingly be contributing to its onslaught by adding a cocktail of chemicals to the general melee of ferocious weather, dehydrating central heating and stodgy but comforting winter food, resulting in a desperate fight for survival for our poor dehydrated, suffocated and poisoned skin cells!

Often the cries for help put forth by our distressed skin – those hated spots and blemishes, dry red itchy patches or broken thread veins – are overlooked, misunderstood, or worse hidden under thick layers of foundation. We forget that symptoms are our friends whose purpose is to guide us towards better health, and instead we attempt to shoot the proverbial messenger!

Viewing our body as a holistic system, the safest organ upon which to express distress is the skin. Compared to our liver, kidneys, heart and brain our skin is low in the hierarchy of organs, and less essential for carrying out the vital functions of life. A cut on our skin heals easily. A lesion in our brain, or heart is another story altogether. More importantly we can see the skin, observe our symptoms and act upon the information they give to heal the systemic disease state swiftly and completely.

Symptoms are messages manifested by our Vital Force (our healing energy /Chi /Higher Self). Their purpose is to alert us to the imbalance in our system, and in order to heal ourselves we need to look beyond the symptom to find out where the finger of blame really lies. Interestingly, the healthier we are, the more vitality we have to express such symptom-alarms.

It can be confusing to find that your skin appears to be more sensitive than it used to be, especially if you’ve made an effort to become healthier by eating good organic food, exercising regularly and using only organic skin care products.  Suddenly you find that certain foods no longer agree with you, or that you’re unable to tolerate your regular cosmetics. How do you know? Your skin tells you! In this situation this is a positive sign that your vitality is returning, and you now have the energy to reject and expel harmful toxins once again.

So don’t curse your skin, or be tempted to reach for the foundation…instead take a moment to consider why your skin is becoming sensitive. Do you still use artificial fragrance? Are there petroleum by-products in your cosmetics (paraffin, petrolatum, mineral oils)? Perhaps you can no longer tolerate the preservatives or the Azo dyes in your shampoo? It may be time to get rid of all those old bottles and jars and start afresh with a super clean range of pure Skin Foods – and while you’re at it perhaps you could also take a food intolerance test, remove those mercury fillings, change over to organic cotton sheets and buy that lovely hemp top you’ve had your eye on!

But whatever you do, remember to celebrate the return of your vitality, and feel love and gratitude towards your amazing self for communicating so clearly the path that leads towards a healthier and happier you!
