Organic Fruit and Vegetable box schemes have become increasingly popular over the past few years. The idea is that you have a box of organic fruit and veg delivered to your door each week. The produce will be seasonal so will vary from week to week, and you can usually choose the size of the box you have. Two of the most well known box schemes are Riverford Organics and Abel and Cole. Riverford grows approximately 90% of it’s vegetables on its farm in Devon and on a co-operative of neighbouring farms. They sell a selection of boxes ranging from a large box costing £17.15 to a mini box costing just £8.95. Delivery is free. Abel and Cole also deliver a range of organic boxes, from a family organic box costing £22.95 to a small basic vegetable box costing £7.99. Abel and Cole buy British whenever possible and have a network of more than 60 independent producers. Delivery costs just 99p.
Both of the above schemes cover most of the country, but there are also lots of great regional box schemes too. If you live in the South of England, have a look at 5adaybox. Although not organic (although the boxes do sometimes contain organic produce), the boxes are great value and produce is sourced direct from farmers and growers local to the 5aday depots. 5aday deliver 3 sizes of box – small seasonal (£11.95), medium family (£15.95) and large value (£19.95). Produce included in the boxes changes weekly and can be checked in the box contents section of the website.
The Organic Delivery Compay are based in London. They are very flexible and can deliver weekly or just whenever needed. Produce can also be mixed and matched and, as well as their fruit and vegetable boxes, they also deliver bread, groceries, skincare products and lots of other things! Have a look on their shop-front page to see the whole range.
There are also box schemes in other parts of the country. Avid Organics deliver to Sheffield and the area to the North-west of Sheffield. As well as offering standard boxes, you can also make up your own box with their Pick Your Own option. Desmond Duncan deliver free to Suffolk and Norfolk and offer fruit and vegetable boxes ranging from just £3.50 to £15. Finally, if you live near Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire, have a look at Chipping Norton Organics. They buy local when produce is available and buy produce from the UK whenever possible. Their main supplier is a co-operative of organic farmers and growers in the Hereford area.
