Natural Living v Nasties: Toilet Cleaners

For this week’s Natural Living v Nasties, I’m focusing on household bleach.  Most of the products you find on the supermarket shelves contain chlorine (usually in the form of sodium hypochlorite) and this has a very negative effect on aquatic life in our waterways.  But what alternatives are out there that will keep you toilet clean and fresh?

ToiletKleener-prToilet Kleener is a ready to use alternative that can just be squirted into your toilet and spread around with a brush.  It’s a bit like a cream cleaner and is very easy to use around the home.  As it’s made from cedar oil, citric acid, xanthan gum and a coconut oil derived surfactant, all the ingredients are biodegradable and sustainable to produce.  The plastic bottle is recyclable too.  Using cedar oil in the mix,  gives Toilet Kleener a wonderful fresh smell and as it is very low in acid, it is less irritating on your skin or your eyes than normal bleach.  It’s priced at around £3.99 for a 708ml bottle.

s302p18177-1Bio D Toilet Cleaner is a concentrated product. Most toilet cleaner contain large quantities of water which have to be transported to the customer and use bigger containers to hold them.   Adding the water yourself cuts down on those transportation miles and means less packaging is produced, plus it will last you longer.  It’s ingredients include acetic acid, citric acid, coconut derived detergent, corn sugar gum, vegetable glycerine and lemongrass oil.  A large 15 litre container of Bio D will cost around £24.75, but will last a long time.

If you prefer, you can make your own toilet cleaner.  A few drops of an antibacterial essential oil (e.g. tea tree oil) in a spray bottle of water can be use to deodorize and freshen your bathroom through the day.   For more in depth toilet cleaning, sprinkle the bowl with bicarbonate of soda, spray on some white vinegar and scrub with a brush.
