Organic Kid’s Bedding

When there are so many exciting bedding choices for kids from Superman sheets to race-car duvets, we often forget about the importance of choosing organic bedding for kids. But the amount of time that kids spend sleeping (or should be sleeping) means that it is essential to make sure that what they are exposed to for over 12 hours a day is just as healthy as the organic food that goes in their mouth.

Bedding itself should not be as difficult as we would think, but given the refinement of modern technology, we’ve had to become much more aware. What many parents do not realise is that sometimes the safety features built into the baby bedding can actually have negative effects. For example, baby bedding that has been treated with chemical fire retardants is being studied by experts to determine the types of effects that these chemicals may have on the baby. And bed mattresses that contain polyurethane foam may have negative effects; especially “off gassing” of chemical residues that your child may be breathing during sleep, not to mention the small particles that are released as the foam ages and is worn in.

Organic mattresses and organic bedding are not only better for the environment because the materials are raised and/or processed without chemicals, but the fibers provide greater comfort than man-made synthetics that do not breathe well making them worse for kids’ sensitive systems. Natural and organic cotton sheets are made without dyes and chemical bleaches are softer and gentler to sensitive skin, a great relief to children suffering from allergies and eczema, or those prone to develop allergies. Pillows made with organic cotton, natural latex, wool, or buckwheat hulls provide superior support and protection from dust mite allergens too.

The great thing is that in this day and age, you don’t have to sacrifice health for style and there are some fantastic options for kids’ bedding including:

  • Green Child of Mine
    • See their Organic Toddler Bedding Set in Chocolate and Lime in the picture above
  • The Fine Cotton Company
    • This company offers two 100% organic cotton ranges of beautiful quality plain dyed bedlinen for children; a plain combed cotton percale and a soft brushed flannel

Excellent post – I couldn’t agree more that organic bedding and mattresses, especially for children, are very important. All the toxins and fumes we breath in from traditional mattresses are not only bad for our health, but bad for the environment.

There are a lot of companies that make organic bedding and mattresses but I’ve heard really great things about Savvy Rest’s organic mattresses if you or your readers are interested!
