From September, schools will have a new environmentally friendly way of fundraising money for books and equipment.  A teacher or a parent can register their school online.  Then in September, the school will be sent a  collection box along with some posters and flyers, in time for the start of the new school year. Children can then drop all used pens, markers or mechanical pencils in the box, and when it is filled, the school can print off a free Royal Mail label and post it to TerraCycle free of charge.

In return for the used pens, the school is credited money. For each writing instrument collected, TerraCycle will donate 2p to the school.  Once one box is filled, another will be sent so the collection doesn’t need to stop and there’s no limit of how many pens and markers they can send in. With the collected pens and markers, Terracycle create new eco-friendly products. The new products range from desk organisers, to rubbish bins and even clocks. For more details, go to the TerraCycle website.

This is such a great idea! I’ve heard of terracycle before, they are doing such a great job in the united states, I had no idea they were also in the UK. I hope they extend this to the general public at some point, we could use this in my office, we go through whiteboard markers like nobody’s business!

I know a fab idea and I hope they do extend it, another reader has asked if they can include nurseries as well, so lets hope they are listening and they do extend it!

  3. I’m glad you like the idea, Sara! That is definitely something we are looking into, so keep a watchful eye on our website, all new programmes will be added there. We will of course let our friends at TGF know of all news as well, so you won’t miss a thing!
Brenda that is an excellent point, and I’m happy to say that this collection programme is also open to nurseries!

Yes excellent idea, could you not set up collection bins in stationery shops/supermarkets? Having children you do tend to accumulate an awful lot of stationery and would find it very useful to have this service easily accessible.
