What is it?

Natracare baby wipes.

Who is reviewing it?

Me, my 3 month-old son and my potty-training daughter. At home we mostly still use cotton wool and water, or reusable wipes, but I was keen to try an eco-friendly solution for when we’re out and about.

In use

Natracare wipes are made of organic cotton so feel quite different from the usual plastic-based baby wipes. These wipes come in sturdy packaging and feel lovely and soft in use. You only need a couple for even quite an unpleasant nappy, and they don’t leave a nasty residue on the skin. Because they’re cotton they are biodegradable, which is great when you’re potty training and the wipes end up in the potty – you can flush them and feel a lot less guilty!

Any negatives?

I wasn’t that keen on the smell – it is a little too much like floor cleaner for me, even though it’s all natural!

Overall

These cotton wipes are hugely superior to the wipes you can buy more commonly. Once you’ve used these you’ll never want to put all those horrible chemical-laden wipes near your children, or yourself again!

What is it?

jackson reece make natural flushable wipes that are made with organic ingredients and contain no alcohol, parabens, SLS or SLES.

Who is reviewing it?

My nearly 2 year old godson and his gorgeous mum!

In use

The wipes came in a degradable pack and are manufactured in the UK. The wipes are infused with their own unique natural balm, which is a balanced blend of certified organic Tea Tree oil, Aloe Vera and the aromatherapy oil of Lavender. The wipes were used for nappy change and for cleaning up mucky hands and faces.

Any negatives?

No, none we loved them.

A great natural alternative, which has been made in the UK and is kind to the environment.

Who are you and what is your position?

What is your favourite green luxury item?

Home bread making machine! I love to cook and I hate processed food. I always prefer home cooking the natural way, can’t beat the difference in taste!

What is your top green tip?

Use office waste paper for the pet rabbits bedding, any office paper is put in the special bin and the kids then use this as bedding for the pet rabbit when they are cleaning the hutch. It’s a great way of recycling and teaching the kids the importance of thinking about what we put in the bin. – What a great idea, will start doing this with my daughters pet rabbit!

What do you do to relax?

Cook and spend time with the kids. I have my own herb garden which I love. It is great to just go out and pull a few sprigs of rosemary for the kids potatoes and dinner time. It makes so much more sense than buying fresh herbs all the time from the shops. However when the kids want Spaghetti Bolognese and basil is not in season I have to resort to buying fresh basil. We are very lucky to live in the country and the kids love to put on their wellie boots and go for a walk over the fields. At this time of year we have lots of pheasants and partridge that are taking little walks around the house – great entertainment for the kids!

Natural Living v. Nasties: Baby Wipes

Most parents discover quite quickly that baby wipes are very useful indeed. Whether using them for a quick nappy change while out and about or just wiping sticky toddler hands, they are something that most parents will use at one point or another. Take a look at the ingredient list on most of the big brand-name wipes in your local supermarket though and you’ll discover a whole host of very ‘un-natural’ ingredients, even in those labelled as ‘sensitive’ or ‘pure’. Most contain parabens or other synthetic preservatives, and some contain other chemical ingredients such as propylene glycol.

So, if you don’t want to use chemicals on your newborn baby’s bottom or on your grubby toddler’s hands, what can you do? There are lots of other great natural wipes available, so I’ve highlighted some of my favourites here:

DermaH20 Water Wipes are a new disposable baby wipe and they look brilliant. They are preservative free and contain 99.9% water and 0.1% fruit extracts. Midwives and dermatologists recommend that cooled boiled water and cotton wool be used to clean your baby’s bottom for the first few months and DermaH20 WaterWipes are the only baby wipes to comply with this recommendation whilst still being as convenient to use as ordinary disposble wipes. WaterWipes are available in selected Boots stores and also online at Boots and Amazon. They cost £4.49 for a pack of 72 wipes. Brenda is currently reviewing these wipes so keep a look out for her review on here soon.If you use washable nappies, then why not try some washable wipes too. They are very easy to use, just keep them in a basket along with your nappies and then use them to wash your baby’s bottom with warm water – gentle on your baby’s skin and very cost effective too. Once you’ve used them, pop them in your nappy bucket so that you can wash and dry them with your nappies. These gorgeous, colourful cotton wipes from Lollipop are ideal and cost £15 for a pack of 10. If you prefer plain wipes, Lollipop also sell natural bamboo wipes, which are very absorbent and lovely and soft. The bamboo wipes are also £15 for a pack of 10.

Supposing you don’t use washable nappies and don’t have a nappy bucket to store dirty wipes in? Thanks to the wonderful Cheeky Wipes you can still easily use washable wipes. The Cheeky Baby Wipes Kit comes with a set of soft terry towelling wipes and 2 containers: 1 for clean wipes and one for used wipes. Once you have used your wipe pop it in the mesh bag inside the messy wipes box. When the bag’s full, it can go in the washing machine with your usual wash. You don’t even need to dry the wipes once they’ve been washed. Put them into their clean container with some water and a drop or two of Cheeky Wipes essential oil blend (also included in the kit) and you’re ready to use them again. I have always felt a bit ‘guilty’ about using disposable wipes on my 18 month-old daughter, so I was really pleased to try Beaming Baby Certified Organic Baby Wipes. Beaming Baby have even thought about us busy mums too, and I was lucky enough to be able to try their Organic Facial Cleansing Wipes too.

Why would you want to buy these products?

There are lots of baby wipes and facial cleansing wipes available in the shops, so why choose Beaming Baby products? I have never felt happy about using traditional baby wipes as they often have a variety of nasty ingredients listed and they are rarely bio-degradable. The Beaming Baby Certified Organic Baby Wipes are free from parabens, alcohol and sodium laureth sulphate. They are also flushable, hypoallergenic, 100% biodegradable and and totally chlorine free. Perfect!

Beaming Baby also support several charities. 10% of the profit when buying these wipes go to SANCCOB, a charity which rescues penguins form oil slicks on the African Coast and to ‘Baby Lifeline’, giving hospital equipment to baby care units.

What are the products like to use?

Both products are very convenient to use, so are great for when you are in a hurry, or for when you are out. The Certified Organic Baby Wipes come in a neat little pack with a very secure peel open lid. They are great for keeping in your changing bag so that you can use them to clean your baby when you are out or when you are travelling away from home. The Organic Facial Cleansing Wipes also come in a very small, neat pack, so can easily be packed into a washbag for overnight stays away from home.

Any negatives? None.

Price: Both products are great value for money. The Baby wipes cost £2.93 for 72 wipes and the Facial Wipes cost £2.44 for 25. Also remember you can buy in bulk from Beaming Baby and if you buy 11 you get the 12th free.

Natalie reviewed this over on our sister site Bambino Goodies a few months ago and loved this organic nappy balm which smells fabulous in a “i made this with my bare hands and it’s still fabulous” kind of way and it’s £5.99 for a 50g tub but does last a while. She has also used their Cradle Cap oil and the Green Baby Shampoo and Bodywash.
