At this time of year I think we all start rooting through our drawers to find our warm clothes. Wearing boots is very practical in the winter, but I find I need boot socks for colder days to keep the chill out. I’ve been looking around to find some ethical options to keep my feet cosy this winter.

These Elle Plain Bamboo Knee Highs from Sock Shop really appeal because they come in a wide range of colour option (11 in total). There are the usual brown, black and grey, but also purple, pink and mustard. They’re reasonably priced too at £8 a pair.

I also like these Pringle Candice Bamboo Boot Socks also from Sock Shop. They look warm and comfy and come with all the benefits of bamboo: very soft, antibacterial, machine washable at low temperatures and breathable. They’re available in black, brown, grey and snow and are priced at £7.

Back to School: Uniforms

When I was at school, I hated the fact that the Back to School advertising seemed to kick off before I’d even finished for the summer. But given that we’re well into the August now, it seems a good time to have a look at what’s available.

Thankfully, it is getting easier to buy an environmentally friendly school uniform. Mainstream retailers like BHS and Marks and Spencer are including some items within their ranges now.

I found these smart, but soft polo shirts at Spirit of Nature. They are made from 60% bamboo and 40% organic cotton and haven’t been bleached or dyed. They are also fairly traded so you can have a clear conscience on that count too. They fit sizes 3-9 years and cost £11.99.

Lint-Kids offer a range of items in various colours made from organic cotton. Sizes 3-16 years are covered and typical prices are £8.99 for a skirt and £9.99 for trousers.

Nigel’s Eco Store have a range of organic cotton school uniform clothes – they have trousers and shirts for both sexes and their prices start at £7.99. They are offering 10% off orders up until 26 August 2009, just quote ECOAUG10 when you checkout.Buying quality items that last well and sourcing second hand items are other good ways to limit environmental impact, plus they should save you money too. Many schools run clothing sales and if your school doesn’t, you could suggest to them that they do so.
