For the next couple of weeks we will be featuring a fairtrade post a day in recognition of fairtrade fortnight.

Recycle Week: Great Gift Ideas

Last week saw me posting daily about my pledge for Recycle Week. This week I thought I would highlight some great gift ideas made from recycled products.

I have a set of theses Champagne Flutes and when I used them this weekend (am still feeling a bit groggy from all the entertaining this weekend!) they created a great stir with my guests with people wanting to know where to get them.

Ecotopia Animal Habitats

I think these animal habitats (birdboxes, hedgehog houses, etc.) make fab gifts. They are great for anyone who likes gardening or wildlife, or is interested in protecting the environment, which must cover a large chunk of the population. Also, I think they make good presents for those often difficult to buy for men. It’s also a good time of year to buy as bird boxes need to be in place well before the nesting season starts.

The Belfry Bat Box is an absolute bargain at its current price of £7.95 (normally £14.95) from Ecotopia. It’s a attractive oak/larch double chambered box which can provide a habitat for many bats at any one time. It’s well made so it should last a long time too and has protection around the enterance slot to help deter predators. The bats have an access ladder and there’s a hinged front door to allow access for inspection and cleaning (this is for humans, not the bats!)

Another favourite of mine is this hedgehog house, also from Ecotopia and priced at £32.95. Hedgehogs are the friend of the gardener eating a range of insect pests and slugs too. This house provides a warm home for them over the winter and could attract hedgehogs into your garden to provide chemical free pest control.

Each hedgehog house has a hinged roof which allows you to view the hedgehogs close up – my little boy would love that.
