The reason for starting the company?

To provide a real nappy advice service to new parents. When looking into cloth nappies with my first child I found the whole thing very confusing! So many choices, so much terminology for different nappy types. I wanted to make the process easier for parents, lets face it, there is enough other stuff to think about when you are expecting!

How long have you been in business?

4 years

Tell us about your products.

We now stock organic clothing for babies and childre and a range of natural or organic toiletries for babies, children and mums.
Our initial stock of cloth nappies has now expanded and includes a pretty wide range. We do however only recommend nappies that we have tried and tested on our own children. We also offer some products which may not necessarily be organic or natural but we highly recommend to parents because we love them!

What is your top green tip?

Tricky… there are so many small things you can do to be more environmentally friendly. I guess it would have to be to “Use real nappies. With over 4,500 disposable nappies going to landfill per child, that is a huge nappy mountain we are creating. I can’t bear the thought of it still being there in hundreds of years!

What do you do to relax?

Walk by the sea or on the moors. We are lucky enough to live near both.

Guest Post: Real Nappies

Given the choice between a pair of paper knickers or ones made from soft, stretchy, cotton, not many of us would choose the paper option. Yet, that’s what many parents opt for when it comes to nappies. Can you imagine going to M&S to buy some underwear and walking out with a bulk pack of paper pants?

Mention reusable nappies to parents and see how many still think the only choice is terry squares and nappy pins. I’m going to shout this bit now: NAPPIES HAVE MOVED ON! Yes, terry squares are still around and long may they continue to be as they are really cheap to buy and will last a lifetime; I know of many a Grandparent using the terry nappies they used on their children as household cloths now. Personally, I can thoroughly recommend cotton nappies as window cloths and they’re great for de-misting cars too, though I would suggest you wait until your child is out of nappies before you start using them around the house.

With resuables, you can unleash your hidden passion for bright prints and bold colours – your children will thank you for it when you show them photographs of themselves as babies when they’re 18, wearing a leopard print waterproof nappy cover. Honest.

So, will it be a pocket nappy, a prefold, or maybe a terry square? How do you choose between one nappy style over another? Simple, you try a few out and then decide. They’re all designed to absorb and contain, whatever your baby’s shape or size, but you’ll more than likely prefer one style over another.

Once you’ve chosen the style, the next thing to think about is the fabric. Is it going to be cotton and if so will it be organic, unbleached or coloured? How about bamboo with its silky soft feel (you’ll need an extra one just to cuddle), or hemp (Can you imagine the looks on your friends faces when you tell them you’ve got a hemp nappy on your baby?). Not forgetting microfibre and fleece too.

If you’ve never seen a ‘proper’ nappy before, then hire or buy a selection to have a look, or get a nappy adviser round to chat about the different options. You’ll soon find yourself being drawn to one or two in particular which will help narrow the choice. You’re going to be seeing a lot of these nappies over the next two – two and half years, so a little research to start off with is worthwhile.

Once you’ve chosen your nappies, go and splash out on a nice pair of fancy nicks, heck go the whole hog and get a matching bra too – think of it as your reward for the hundreds of pounds you’ll be saving by not buying disposable pants or nappies.

Who are you and what is your position?

Sharon Heinrich – Owner of Green Jelly I am married to Andrew and have two young daughters Amélie (born Feb-05) and Freya (born Oct-06). We live in Great Chesterford, a village near Saffron Walden on the Essex/Cambridgeshire border.

The reason for starting the company?

After the birth of my first daughter I started using cloth nappies and absolutely loved them! I became involved with the Essex Cloth Nappy Network setting up nappuccinos (coffee mornings with nappies) and other events promoting reusable nappies to parents and carers in my local area. After finding it very difficult to find local representatives to demonstrate the different types of nappy, I thought that I could give it a try and Green Jelly was born. Not wanting to restrict my product range and the advice I give, I decided to establish the company as an independent retailer.

How long have you been in business?

I started trading locally in 2006 and launched my webshop in 2007.

Tell us about your products?

I supply quality eco friendly and ethically produced products for babies, toddlers and their families including reusable nappies, cloth nappy accessories, baby slings and carriers, organic baby toiletries and gifts. I only recommend products tried and tested on my family or those of friends and trusted customers. Use reusable nappies! Even factoring in the energy used in laundering cloth nappies, significant environmental gains can be made by reducing your carbon footprint – not to mention the reduction in waste sent to landfill, reduced usage of natural resources, fewer chemicals and lower transport costs when compared to disposables. You can also save lots of money and modern washable nappies look very cute!
